Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Analyzers
Carbon monoxide analyzer (CO) is an invisible killer that inhalation can cause within minutes. It’s a poisonous byproduct of incomplete combustion from faulty stoves, furnaces or vehicles or can be emitted from contaminated fuels used in metal heat treating applications. CO detectors monitor ambient air and sound an alarm before dangerous levels of the gas accumulate to give people time to ventilate or evacuate. Some system-connected detectors also alert a monitoring service that can dispatch emergency services.
Many CO monitors use the same sensor technology found in smoke detectors, but there are some dedicated carbon monoxide sensors and analyzers that offer improved sensitivity for accurate readings. NDIR sensors in particular are highly sensitive and stable to ensure accurate CO measurement.
Another type of carbon monoxide detector draws inspiration from hemoglobin, a protein that delivers oxygen to your cells (but can be hijacked by CO). Some CO detectors use a gel that chemically reacts with the deadly gas to cause it to change color, and light sensors track the gel’s reaction as concentrations rise.

They’re ideal for continuous emissions monitoring systems, as they provide part-per-million measurements in a compact instrument. They can be used in a variety of settings, from residential to industrial and commercial. They’re often installed in the exhaust stream of steel-making applications like EAFs and in metal heat treat processes to monitor combustion efficiency.
