Elvis Costello’s “Green Shirt”

“green shirt” is a song written by Elvis Costello. It appeared on his third album Armed Forces, a record which was released in 1979. Its title is an obvious nod to the band’s love of Kraftwerk, but its lyrics explore the nexus between media lust and mind control. Featuring a synchronized drum hook by the Attractions, it was recorded by both the band and its lead singer. The song was released in July of that year, and it quickly became a fan favorite.

Fortunately for fans, the band was never hesitant to perform the song. It was featured in their setlists during acoustic sets, and it was also used during their performances at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands. Interestingly enough, it was one of the few songs they had not yet ditched from their repertoire. It was still present in their set list during their last show with Imposters in March.

The song’s real hook lies in its bass/drum quadruplet. A cymbal ride by Pete Thomas and a drive home point by percussionist Pete Thomas add a little bit of distinction to the track.
